| Before winning the bid for the 2012 Olympics in Stratford and was undergoing significant regeneration, including Stratford International station, part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
North of downtown is the city of Stratford, a multi-pound scheme to regenerate a former railway site of 73 hectares. Among the plans is a large shopping center similar in size to Bluewater that John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have already committed stores.Adjacent to Stratford City will be 5,000 new homes, schools, offices, public spaces and several other facilities within of what will be a major metropolitan center.
The 2012 Olympic Park is located south-west and north-west of downtown Stratford and includes the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and Velopark London. It will also provide valuable green space for residents of Stratford on what was industrial land.
University of East London (UEL) has its main campus in Stratford University House, a listed building, dating from the 19th century. Next to it is the beautiful Passmore Edwards combines stunning building with a vaulted ceiling frescos.
Birkbeck College, University of London, runs courses in the space provided by the UEL, but has plans to build its own campus in Stratford.
